Canada defends its 2010 Olympics home turf advantage

    (AFP) – 15 hours ago

OTTAWA — Canada's 2010 Winter Olympics organizing committee was unapologetic Monday for limiting foreign athletes' access to venues to train, in order to give Canada's team a home turf advantage.

"We're doing the best we can to give them (Team Canada) the advantages of being at home, as every other country in the world would do," said John Furlong, chief executive officer of the Vancouver Games organizing committee.

Lets see... all the other countries have done it, including the U.S.

We paid for the facilities... so Duh, suck it up.

Alarm bells are sounding in Washington over PetroChina's $1.9-billion investment in Alberta projects

    Shawn McCarthy

Ottawa Globe and Mail Update Last updated on Wednesday, Sep. 02, 2009 09:08AM EDT

PetroChina Co. Ltd.'s (PTR-N110.321.171.07%) $1.9-billion investment in the oil sands is raising alarms in Washington, with the head of a congressionally-appointed China watchdog saying the company is clearly a vehicle of Beijing's Communist government.

Too bad.  If we were such good friends they wouldn't be shaking us down for passports and copy the contents of or PDA's and Laptops.

They've been taking advantage of our generosity for too long and getting our discounted resources for too long.  Time for the ungrateful Uncle to get in line.

Stage set for 'suspicionless' searches of laptops, PDAs at U.S. borders

Travelers arriving at U.S. borders could have their laptops, PDAs, and other digital devices searched, copied and even held by customs agents -- all without need to show suspicion for cause.

    Plains of Abraham re-enactment

Plains of Abraham re-enactment doubtful after separatist outcry

Oh no... the separtists are upset... whatever shall we do?

Of course lets rewrite our Canadian History so it does not offend anyone...

Pretty soon we will have censored out and redrawn everything so that there nothing left to identify us as Canadians.

Maybe, we should just redraft the National Anthem to be one long apology so that we can get it over with and address all of the wrongs in the past all at once.

Right or wrong, the actions of the past need to preserved in accuracy so that our future generations can evaluate those actions and learn from them.  Redrafting or censoring the past merely eliminates that opportunity to educate people and learn from those past events.

    No Brainer

Ontario law banning smoking in cars with children takes effect Wednesday

    Published: Tuesday, January 20, 2009 | 5:24 PM ET

    Canadian Press NewsItem/NewsComponent/NewsLines/ByLine

TORONTO - It will be illegal in Ontario to smoke in a vehicle with a child present starting on Weedless Wednesday as the province joins British Columbia, Nova Scotia and several American states that have similar bans in place.

If this isn't a no brainer then I don't know what would be...

How about all provinces demonstrate some responsibility and enact this into law.

    Socialism to the rescue!

There is a fervoured stampede to the trough...  auto manufacturers, bank & credit companies, big oil... the list goes on and on.  All fat and bloated from their opportunistic exploitations and greed now facing lean times by an economy on the down swing.  They have squandered their exorbitant profits choosing to live in the moment and failing to plan for the future.  Now these industries and companies are all crying poor, begging and demanding that we as a society must through our limited means and budgets, put forward cash from our pockets to help sustain their excesses and mismanagement.

So has it become a convenient fall back for these companies knowing that government will bear the burden of their failed businesses on the backs of Joe/Jane average to not plan or manage their companies effectively?  I am thinking that these CEO's and company managers should be repaying their bonuses and dividends and turning in all of their stock options before I as a tax payer should be pulling money from my pocket to bail their companies out.

I am also thinking that if we are going to be bailing these companies out then I would expect that as new "share holders" in these companies that my future revenues generated from the company being profitable should be directed towards paying my taxes.  I am thinking that if we keep bailing out companies that sooner or later all of our taxes will be paid by the companies that we save from financial ruin.

    Just a thought...

Manley says Liberals should replace Dion as leader

Updated Sat. Dec. 6 2008 6:45 PM ET

    CTV.ca News Staff

Former Deputy Prime Minister John Manley says Stephane Dion should step down as Liberal leader so a replacement can take charge before Christmas, and prepare for the resumption of Parliament in January.

Writing in Saturday's Globe and Mail, Manley said "the first step for my party is to replace Stephane Dion as leader with someone whose first job is to rebuild the Liberal Party, rather than leading a coalition with the NDP."

Lets start with Dion has to go... and get someone in there that has a clue like Michael Ignatieff or John Manley.

Then, it is time for the "National" parties which represent the overwhelming majority of Canadians to get it together and work together in administering our country in a positive and constructive manner.  In my opinon Canadians have a higher expectation of their government working in a collaborative manner that reflects the diverse nature of us as being Canadian with a majority of the responsibilty laying at the feet of the two primary parties, the Liberals and the Conservatives.

    "Sedition"

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Jump to: navigation, search
This is about the law term. For other uses see Sedition (disambiguation)

Sedition is a term of law which refers to covert conduct, such as speech and organization, that is deemed by the legal authority as tending toward insurrection against the established order. Sedition often includes subversion of a constitution and incitement of discontent (or resistance) to lawful authority. Sedition may include any commotion, though not aimed at direct and open violence against the laws. Seditious words in writing are seditious libel. A seditionist is one who engages in or promotes the interests of sedition.

Because sedition is typically considered a subversive act, the overt acts that may be prosecutable under sedition laws vary from one legal code to another. Where those legal codes have a traceable history, there is also a record of the change of definition for what constituted sedition at certain points in history. This overview has served to develop a sociological definition of sedition as well, within study of persecution.

The difference between sedition and treason consists primarily in the subjective ultimate object of the violation to the public peace. Sedition does not consist of levying war against a government nor of adhering to its enemies, giving enemies aid, and giving enemies comfort. Nor does it consist, in most representative democracies, of peaceful protest against a government, nor of attempting to change the government by democratic means (such as direct democracy or constitutional convention).

Put simply, sedition is the stirring up of rebellion against the government in power. Treason is the violation of allegiance to one's sovereign or state and has to do with giving aid to enemies or levying war. Sedition is more about encouraging the people to rebel, where treason is actually betraying the country. Sedition laws somewhat equate to Terrorism and Public Order laws.

So what do we do when "it is in your back yard"?

Amnesty International | Crisis in Congo

We said “never again” after the slaughter in Rwanda.

But it’s happening again, right before our eyes.

Right now, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), women are being raped as a weapon of war in a bloody conflict that has taken 5 million lives over the past decade. Boys and girls are being taken from their homes and trained to work as child soldiers. A quarter of a million people are fleeing renewed violence, while the world watches.

A hungry, exhausted boy in the queue at the IDP site in Kibati, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), November 2008. The Kibati site had a population of 6,000 until the recent fighting started just over a week ago when the camp population surged to an estimated 40,000 people. UNHCR/P. Taggart Why can’t we act to save the lives of millions of people in the Democratic Republic of Congo?

Are we indifferent to yet another war in Africa? Are we too distracted by the economic crisis in the West? Or are we simply made numb by the absolutely staggering death toll?

The conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo is complex.
It’s rooted in ethnic rivalries and bitterness held over from the genocide in Rwanda, longstanding economic imbalances from colonial times, internal power struggles over control of key resources like the coltan needed to make our cellphones and electronic games, and interference from neighbouring countries.

But what I’m asking you to do is simple:

    1. Urge our leaders to take responsibility. Send a message to Prime Minister Harper asking him to ensure greater protection for the civilians caught up on the DRC conflict.
    2. Make a donation today to help Amnesty protect the civilians who are most at risk because of this violent conflict.

On Nov 20th, the UN Security Council approved the sending of an additional 3,000 peacekeepers to DRC - a vital first step - but more pressure is urgently needed to ensure swift and effective deployment.

Use your voice to defend lives.

Amnesty International Report: No End fo War on Women and Children

    > Report: No End to War on Women and Children
    > Personal accounts

I urge you not to be immobilized by the complexity of this crisis. Amnesty International’s recent report “No End to War on Women and Children” chronicles numerous, heartbreaking accounts not just of eyewitnesses, but of individual victims of this war.

(Caution: These links to Amnesty International’s report and personal accounts contain direct personal stories of rape. The content is upsetting and is documented only to mobilize desperately needed action. There are no photographs on these links.)

UN peacekeepers are the last hope for hundreds of thousands of civilians. So many people remain out of reach of aid workers, and some humanitarian operations have been suspended because of the fragile security situation. There is a high risk that this conflict will escalate into a regional war.

    Please take action today.

Amnesty International works continuously on addressing the underlying causes of conflict, trying to deter shameful acts of violence by ensuring that all those responsible for mass human rights violations face trial before the International Criminal Court. Our priority must be to protect civilians through reinforcing the capacity of the United Nation’s peacekeeping mission.

Please consider making a contribution to support our ongoing work to ensure the safety of civilians in DRC.

Please remember that behind the statistics – the 250,000 displaced people, and 5 million dead - are individual, valuable human lives.

    Alex NeveThank you.

P.S. Amnesty International is asking world leaders to work urgently with the broad international community. Please ask Canada’s Prime Minister to urge the Security Council to reinforce peacekeepers in the DRC, providing the special equipment and personnel needed to effectively protect civilians and safeguard humanitarian operations. Send a message now.

    Carving up the country

So the Liberals, NDP and the Bloc are going to try to form the next government... that ought to be interesting.  Undoubtedly expensive though given that any agreement would have to ensure that each of the parties got something they wanted out of the deal.

I think what I would really like to know is what the agreement for the division of our country is comprised of and what the real cost of it is going to be.  I am more then a little concerned that this is one bill that we cannot afford.

    CANADA
PENSION  - A Must Read.  Only in Canada .

Do not apply  for your old age pension...
Apply to be a refugee.   It is interesting that the federal government provides a  single refugee with a monthly allowance of $1, 890.00 and each can  get an additional $580.00 in  social assistance for a total  of $2, 470.00.
This compares very well to a single pensioner  who, after contributing to the growth and development of   Canada for 40 or 50  years, can only receive a monthly maximum of $1, 012.00 in old age  pension and Guaranteed Income Supplement.
Furthermore if you  had the wisdom to have a RRSP and made other income generating  investments you may have earned the right to receive nothing from  the Federal Government as they claw your  Old Age Pension  back because in their opinion you do not need it!!!!!
Maybe our pensioners should apply as refugees!

Let's send this thought to as many Canadians as we can and  maybe we can
get the refugees cut back to $1,012.00 and  the pensioners up to $2, 470.00,
So they can enjoy the money  they were forced to submit to the Canadian government for those 40  to 50 years.

Bankers, insurers make case for extra relief

Eoin Callan, Financial Post  Published: Friday, November 07, 2008

Canada's top bank and insurance executives are urging Prime Minister Stephen Harper to take fresh steps to ease funding pressures on financial institutions as the world braces for a global economic slowdown.

Banks and insurance companies looking for relief from the funding pressures?  Funny when consumers, during times of record profits, approached the Banks and insurance companies looking for relief from runaway service charges, user fees, and sky rocketing rates looked for some relief we were told to suck it up.

    Public Ire, where?

Provincial funding for private schools draws public ire
Sarah McGinnis, with files from Renata D'Aliesio, Calgary Herald
    Published: Thursday, July 31, 2008

Parents and public education advocates are outraged that despite millions of dollars worth of maintenance work needed at public schools, the province has decided to increase funding for private schools.

Lets see...apprx $12000(+) per student per year to educate a child in the public system, apprx $4000(-) to educate a child in a private school/home school environment.

I think maybe the public is getting a better deal for their tax dollars funding alternative education.

As for the "underfunded public system"... that is a result of the bloated administration, highest teachers salaries in Canada, poor resource planning, and limited creativity that is preventing the "more than adequate" funding dollars  from being spent where it needs to be spent.

The reality is that education is changing and the methods for delivering education is evolving.  It is time that the protectionist relics of the past join the 21st century and realize that.
